Be True to Yourself

Psalm 37.4,5Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.

Ezekiel 36.26 – I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

In a world where we are constantly told to be true to ourselves, what does that mean for the believer, the one who has given themself to Jesus?

The world would tell you that to be true to yourself is to follow your heart.  To do what makes you happy.  And to live the life that you want to live.

But when we give our hearts to Jesus, everything changes.  Our hearts now belong to Him, not us.  Our lives are now His and not our own.  So, how do we be true to ourselves when we belong to someone else?

Being true to myself means to be true to my decision to follow Christ. It means daily laying down my life in order to live for Him.

When we make the decision to follow Christ its because we see our need for Him, we see His goodness and His faithfulness, we see His love. These things become the desires of our heart.  More of Him.  More of Him in our attitudes and behaviors, more of Him in our thoughts and opinions, more of Him in every part of our lives.  More of Him.

More of Him and less of me will look different.  His desires look different than mine.  But chasing Him and all He has for me doesn’t mean I’m not being true to me. It doesn’t mean that I’m not following my heart.  In fact, I am.  Because my heart is His and I desire nothing less than His plan and will for my life.

I believe and trust that His plan and will is so much better than my own, so I run after Him even when my legs are tired and my lungs are finding it hard to breathe.  I hold onto Him, my comfort, my shelter, my tower of strength.

Christian, be true to yourself.  The one who made the decision to follow Jesus.  It isn’t a one-time decision, but becomes an every moment of every day decision.  Follow your heart, the one that He gave you, that belongs to Him and is led by Him.

Let the world see the real you, the one that desires to passionately pursue, and rely on, your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Matthew 6.21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
